TWIST for Parents
Parents of children who have developmental and acquired communication and cognitive challenges often want to know what they can do to help their child maximize his or her potential. This exciting new short-term program in Potomac, Maryland provides families with information they need to supplement educational and rehabilitation programs. It offers parents and other caregivers many resources to help children tackle challenges head on and jump-start efforts to improve reading, writing, talking, understanding, thinking and learning skills.
Children are expected to learn, understand and integrate information at an earlier age. Many struggle to keep up with their peers. Communication and Cognitive specialists alone can not meet the many needs of children. TWIST for Parents was created to empower parents with the knowledge of the many resources and techniques which may enhance and augment the efforts of trained therapists and teachers.
During TWIST for Parents, Joan Green, M.A. CCC-SLP, provides a variety of services to expedite the learning process. She reviews the child's educational and medical reports and selects technology and other resources parents can use at home. She brainstorms with families potential effective and affordable solutions. She demonstrates the use of software, assistive technology, traditional therapy approaches and other materials and resources which parents can use.
Children are typically drawn to computers and tech devices which provide entertainment and visual and auditory cues. When they are more actively engaged, the brain may be better able to produce desired results. Along with a renewed feeling of hope and motivation, at the end of TWIST for Parents, families receive and individualized "Action Plan" - a detailed description of how to use the suggested tools and resources to help their child advance.
Parents will benefit from:
- Discussion of your child's communicative and cognitive strengths and weaknesses with a professional with over 20 years of experience and 4 children of her own.
- Demonstration of potential software programs by a computer savvy clinician with an expertise in using technology to motivate and stimulate children to improve skills such as reading, writing, talking, and learning.
- A review of alternative compensatory strategies using assistive software and hardware.
- Customization of your computer to meet the physical and cognitive needs of your child.
- Training of family members and "computer buddies" to assist with implementation of the "Action Plan" upon discharge.
TWIST for Parents includes:
- Up to 4 hours of phone and email consultation and coaching with parents
- Review of testing and treatment notes
- Communication with teachers, therapists and doctors
- 2 hours of hands-on computer training with parents and caregivers at Innovative Speech Therapy's Center in Potomac, MD.
- Two sessions which are each up to two hours of direct interaction and demonstration of traditional and technology based intervention and remediation strategies with children who have speech, language and cognitive deficits.
- Counseling regarding behavior management and daily routines to maximize progress toward goals.
- Software and other tools and devices worth up to $200.00
Admission Considerations
Admission is open to all parents who have a child with communication or cognitive impairments.

Cost
TWIST for Parents costs $1,800.00. Half of this cost ($900.00) is payable in advance. The final amount is due on the last treatment day. Checks should be made payable to: Innovative Speech Therapy. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted.
