Intensive Short-Term Speech Therapy Program to Maximize Progress

Join us and immerse yourself in an Innovative TWIST in Speech Therapy

TWIST for Adults

Stroke and traumatic brain injury survivors, as well as victims to other degenerative neurological and developmental, and language and learning challenges can now immerse themselves in a new TWIST to speech therapy. This exciting opportunity provides hope for individuals with newly acquired difficulties as well as for those who have lived with their deficits for many years. It is helpful for people who continue to receive professional rehabilitation services in addition to people who have been discharged from other speech therapy programs. It empowers participants to tackle their challenges head on and jump-start rehabilitation and education efforts.

Throughout the TWIST program, participants will be engaged in many computer activities that are selected and adapted to match their learning style while keeping in mind their strengths and weaknesses pertaining to reading, visual, perception, writing, language, speech, voice and memory, attention, concentration, problem solving and thinking. Motivation, task diligence, frustration tolerance and goals of therapy all play a role in the selection of programs and computer software. Goals of therapy using computers and traditional techniques may include but are not limited to improving skills in: attention, concentration, reading comprehension, written expression, listening comprehension, word retrieval, verbal expression, visual scanning, memory, reasoning, problem solving, articulation, voice and basic computer skills. Computer training may also include learning to use technology for vocational, educational, and personal/social endeavors.

Along with a renewed feeling of hope and motivation, participants return home with a comprehensive Individualized "Action Plan" for Communication Regeneration - a detailed assessment of their skills and goals for continued improvement either with Innovative Speech Therapy, another speech-language pathologist, or on their own. Software and other helpful materials are provided and helpful local, regional and national resources are highlighted.

Therapy sessions focus on:
  • Analyzing each person's communicative and cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • Generating a home practice program to stimulate and improve communication and cognitive skills
  • Developing alternative compensatory strategies with a heavy emphasis on the most appropriate technology
  • Accessing community resources to help improve overall quality of life.
  • Training family members and "computer buddies" to assist with implementation of the "Action Plan" upon discharge.
TWIST includes:
  • 18 hours of 1:1 speech therapy to accelerate the rehabilitation process with Joan Green, M.A. CCC-SLP, within one or two weeks.
  • Computer customization to make the computer easier to use.
  • A comprehensive Individualized Action Plan for Communication Regeneration binder with detailed suggestions.
  • Software and other tools and devices worth up to $400.00.
Admission Considerations

Admission is open to all adults with communication or cognitive impairments who are motivated to improve the quality of their life and can tolerate several hours of therapy a day. Partner participation is considered an essential component of our program. One "computer buddy" is encouraged to accompany each program participant.

Registration

If you would like to discuss TWIST or reserve dates for this program, please contact or call Joan Green at 1-800-IST-2550 or 301-602-2899.

Cost

Immersion in this intensive comprehensive speech therapy program costs $3,600. Half of this cost ($1,800) is payable in advance to hold a spot in our program. The final amount is due on the last treatment day of the program. Checks should be made payable to: Innovative Speech Therapy. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted.

Living Arrangements

During the program, participants in TWIST may live in residence at Summerville Assisted Living of Potomac, MD as space permits. Room and board are paid directly to Summerville. Each person staying at Summerville will be considered a "guest" rather than a "temporary resident" and needs to be self-sufficient. There is an additional cost to cover meal expenses.

We are minutes away from Washington, DC. Many participants have turned this stay into a mini-vacation. There are many nearby hotels.

Disclaimer

We do our best to assist with progress and to make significant improvements to overall quality of life. However, we do not expressly make any guarantees for specific outcomes for therapy.
